Welcome to the Harlaston Website
The name Harlaston comes from Old English and means Heoruwulf’s farm or Heorulaf’s farm. It has been suggested that St Matthew’s Church goes back to the 11th Century and is of Anglo-Saxon origin. The Corn Mill is mentioned in the Doomsday Book.
Until 1845 Harlaston was a chapelry of the parish of Clifton Campville, after which date is became an independent ecclesiastical parish.
The Township of Harlaston became part of the Tamworth Poor Union in 1836. It became a civil parish in its own right and became part of Tamworth Rural District in 1894. During the boundary changes in 1934 the parish was extended to include Haselour, becoming part of Lichfield Rural District. In 1974 it became part of the new non-metropolitian district of Lichfield.
In 1851 the population was 221, on about 1400 acres of land. There were two lords of the Manor, Captain Theophilius Levett and W Chettle , though much of the land belonged to other people.
In 2022 the population was estimated as 350, with most of the land being owned by local farmers, whose families have farmed the lands for many generations Indeed, Harlaston is well known for its Large White Pigs and pedigree cows.
For more in depth history local residents are currently researching Harlaston’s history and their findings are published on this website under History of Harlaston.
Best kept Village Award
Harlaston has regularly entered the Best Kept Village competition over the years in the Lichfield /Cannock Small Village Category competing for the trophy, sponsored by the Leavesley Group on behalf of the National Memorial Arboretum
” The competition is not about the prettiest village but deciding which village has involved its residents – individuals, local organisations, all age groups – and with a large slice of community spirit and involvement, has made it the Best Kept Village in its area, perhaps even in the whole of Staffordshire!” (www.staffs.org.uk)
The focus of the competition is community spirit, residents working together to maintain and improve the appearance, amenities and overall environment. The preliminary rounds are in May and June. The finals take place in July.
In 2015 the results for the Lichfield / Cannock Small Village Category were as follows:
1st – Edingale (Trophy Winner)
Harlaston was highly recommended
Highways and Pot Holes
Residents have reported dangerous pot holes and difficulties due to conditions of the roads in and around the village. The Parish Council would appreciate the support of local residents in reporting any issues they have noticed regarding pot holes and road maintenance. This can be done easily using the following link:
https://apps2.staffordshire.gov.uk/web/reportfault/#divSelectionHeader
Then Staffordshire County Council will come out and inspect the issues that have been reported and attempt to resolve them.
Many thanks for you support
